Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup black cocoa powder (ultra-dark)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream, chilled
  • Orange and purple gel food coloring
  • Halloween-themed sprinkles and gummy worms for garnish

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch square baking pan or line it with parchment paper to ensure the cake is easy to remove once baked.
  2. Step 2: Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, black cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Ensure there are no large clumps of cocoa powder for a smooth batter.
  3. Step 3: Add Wet Ingredients: Add the egg, buttermilk, warm water, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Whisk by hand or use an electric mixer on medium speed for about two minutes until the batter is well-combined and smooth.
  4. Step 4: Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out clean. Let the cake cool completely in the pan before crumbling it into bite-sized pieces.
  5. Step 5: Prepare the Creamy Filling: In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar together until smooth. In another bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture. Divide the filling into two bowls, tinting one orange and the other purple using the gel food coloring.
  6. Step 6: Assemble the Trifle Cups: Take 12 clear plastic or glass cups. Place a layer of crumbled black velvet cake at the bottom of each cup. Pipe or spoon a layer of orange cream over the cake. Add another layer of cake crumbs, followed by a layer of purple cream.
  7. Step 7: Garnish and Decorate: Finish each cup with a final sprinkle of cake crumbs or Halloween sprinkles. Top with gummy worms, chocolate spiders, or edible glitter to complete the spooky look.
