Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups water
  • 3 black tea bags (or 3 tablespoons loose-leaf black tea)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, sliced
  • 1/2 orange, sliced into rounds
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • Fresh cranberries for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place the water, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise, and sliced ginger into a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 5 to 7 minutes. This allows the spices to release their essential oils and flavor the water deeply.
  2. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the black tea bags or loose-leaf tea and the orange slices to the hot, spiced water. Cover the pot with a lid and let everything steep for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on how strong you like your tea.
  3. Remove the tea bags and the orange slices. Stir in your honey or maple syrup until it is completely dissolved. Pour the tea through a fine-mesh strainer into a teapot or directly into individual mugs to remove the whole spices and ginger pieces.
  4. Pour the hot tea into mugs. For a festive touch, garnish each glass with a fresh cinnamon stick, an extra slice of orange, or a few fresh cranberries. Serve immediately while hot.
