Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (5 ounces each) tuna in water, drained well
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup celery, finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon red onion, minced
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices of your favorite bread (sourdough, whole wheat, or white)
  • 2 leaves of green leaf lettuce
  • Optional: 4 slices of tomato or pickles

Instructions

  1. Open the cans of tuna and drain the liquid thoroughly using the lid or a fine-mesh strainer. Transfer the tuna to a medium-sized mixing bowl and use a fork to flake the chunks into smaller pieces.
  2. Add the mayonnaise, diced celery, minced red onion, lemon juice, and Dijon mustard to the bowl with the tuna. Stir everything together until the ingredients are evenly distributed and the tuna is well-coated.
  3. Taste the mixture and add salt and freshly ground black pepper according to your preference. If you like a bit more tang, you can add an extra splash of lemon juice at this stage.
  4. Lightly toast your bread slices until they are golden brown. While this step is optional, toasting the bread helps prevent it from becoming soggy and adds a nice structural crunch to the sandwich.
  5. Place a leaf of lettuce on two of the bread slices. Scoop a generous portion of the tuna mixture onto the lettuce. Top with tomato slices or pickles if desired, then place the remaining bread slices on top. Cut diagonally and serve immediately.
