Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups bread flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1.5 tablespoons dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1.5 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing the top)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour, instant yeast, salt, sugar, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder. Use a whisk to stir everything together until the herbs and yeast are evenly distributed throughout the flour.
  2. Pour the warm water and olive oil into the dry mixture. Using a wooden spoon or a sturdy spatula, stir until a shaggy, sticky dough forms and no dry pockets of flour remain. Do not worry about the dough looking rough; that is exactly how it should look at this stage.
  3. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Place it in a warm, draft-free spot and let it rise for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the dough has doubled in size and looks bubbly on top.
  4. Gently grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan with butter or cooking spray. Using a spatula, deflate the dough slightly and transfer it into the prepared pan. Use the back of a spoon to smooth the top so it reaches the corners of the pan.
  5. Cover the loaf pan and let the dough rise a second time for about 30 to 45 minutes. During this time, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). The dough should rise until it is about an inch above the rim of the pan.
  6. Place the pan in the center of the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes. The crust should be a deep golden brown and the loaf should sound hollow when tapped. For a soft crust, brush the top with melted butter immediately after removing it from the oven.
  7. Let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack. It is important to let the bread cool completely before slicing to ensure the interior structure sets properly.
