  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional, for extra fudginess)
  • 1 cup miniature marshmallows (for the web) OR 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
  • Plastic spiders (optional, for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Oven and Pan Preparation: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8 inch square baking pan or line it with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal later.
  2. Step 2: Mix the Brownie Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the brownie mix, oil, water, and eggs. Stir until just combined, being careful not to overmix. If you are using extra chocolate chips, fold them in gently now.
  3. Step 3: Bake the Brownies: Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs. Do not overbake.
  4. Step 4: Cool the Base: Remove the brownies from the oven and let them cool completely in the pan. This is a crucial step; if the brownies are too hot, the “web” material will melt into a puddle rather than holding its shape.
  5. Step 5: Create the Web Circles: Melt your marshmallows or white chocolate in the microwave in 15-second intervals until smooth. Transfer the melted mixture to a piping bag or a plastic bag with the corner snipped off. Pipe 3 or 4 concentric circles (rings) starting from the center of the brownie block.
  6. Step 6: Draw the Spider Web: While the white rings are still soft, take a toothpick or a thin knife. Start at the center of the brownie and drag the toothpick outward toward the edges of the pan. Repeat this 8 to 10 times around the circles to create the “spokes” of the spider web.
  7. Step 7: Final Flourish: Allow the web design to set for about 10 minutes. Lift the brownies out of the pan using the parchment paper and cut them into 16 squares. Add a plastic spider to the top for a final spooky touch.
