Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large ripe pears (Bosc or Anjou), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3 large tart apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (divided)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×9 inch baking dish or a similar sized casserole dish with butter or non-stick spray to prevent the fruit juices from sticking.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced pears and apples. Drizzle the lemon juice over the fruit to keep them from browning. Add 1/4 cup of the brown sugar, the cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Toss everything together until the fruit is evenly coated in spices and sugar.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, the remaining 1/4 cup of brown sugar, and the salt. Add the cold, cubed butter. Use a pastry cutter or your clean fingertips to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour the spiced fruit mixture into your prepared baking dish and spread it out into an even layer. Sprinkle the oat crumble mixture over the top, making sure to cover the fruit completely from edge to edge.
  5. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes. The fruit should be bubbling at the edges, and the topping should be a deep golden brown. If the top browns too quickly, cover it loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
  6. Remove the dish from the oven and let it sit for at least 10 to 15 minutes before serving. This allows the fruit juices to thicken up slightly, making it easier to scoop.
