Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (9-inch) unbaked deep-dish pie crust
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon Kentucky bourbon (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place your unbaked pie crust into a deep-dish pie plate. If you are using a store-bought frozen crust, ensure it is thawed according to the package directions. Crimp the edges of the crust for a decorative touch.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and all-purpose flour until well combined. Add the two large eggs and the melted butter. Whisk the mixture until it is smooth and creamy. If you are using bourbon and vanilla extract, stir them in now along with the salt.
  3. Gently fold in the chopped walnuts and the semi-sweet chocolate chips using a spatula. Ensure the nuts and chocolate are evenly distributed throughout the batter. This ensures every slice of pie has a perfect balance of texture and flavor.
  4. Pour the mixture into the prepared unbaked pie shell. Use your spatula to smooth out the top so the walnuts and chocolate chips are level. The filling may look thin, but it will puff up and set beautifully as it bakes.
  5. Place the pie on the middle rack of the oven. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes. You will know it is done when the top is golden brown and the center is set but still has a very slight jiggle. If the edges of the crust start to brown too quickly, cover them with a pie shield or aluminum foil halfway through the baking time.
  6. Remove the pie from the oven and place it on a wire rack to cool completely. This step is crucial because the filling continues to set as it cools. For the best slices, wait at least two hours before cutting into the pie.
