1 box (18.3 oz) of your favorite fudge brownie mix
Ingredients required by the brownie mix (typically eggs, oil, and water)
1 cup black frosting or dark chocolate frosting
12 large candy eyeballs
1 tube of silver or light grey decorator icing
1 tube of black decorator icing with a small round tip
Instructions
Step 1: Preparation and Baking Preheat your oven according to the instructions on the brownie mix box. Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal. Prepare the brownie batter as directed and spread it evenly in the pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
Step 2: Cooling and Cutting Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan. This is crucial for getting clean edges. Once cool, lift the brownies out using the parchment paper. Use a sharp knife to cut the brownies into 12 equal-sized rectangles. These will serve as the base for your spell books.
Step 3: Applying the Base Frosting Take your black or dark chocolate frosting and spread a smooth layer over the top of each brownie rectangle. Try to keep the edges as neat as possible to maintain the rectangular “book” shape. If your frosting is too thick, you can microwave it for 5 seconds to make it more spreadable.
Step 4: Adding the Eye Place one large candy eyeball on the right side of each brownie, about halfway down. Press it gently into the frosting so it stays secure. This represents the iconic eye that “wakes up” on the Sanderson Sisters’ book.
Step 5: Creating the Decorative Stitching Using the black decorator icing with a small round tip, draw a semi-circle around the candy eye to look like an eyelid. Then, draw small “stitch” lines along the left side of the brownie (the spine) and randomly around the eye to give it a sewn-together leather appearance.
Step 6: Adding Silver Details Use the silver or grey decorator icing to draw small swirls or “metal” clasps on the corners of the brownies. You can also draw a vertical line down the left side to further define the spine of the book. Let the icing set for about 15 minutes before serving.
