Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons culinary grade matcha powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips (for melting)
  • 24 candy eyes
  • 12 mini pretzel sticks (broken in half for the “bolts”)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8 inch square baking pan or line it with parchment paper, leaving a slight overhang on the sides to make it easy to lift the brownies out later.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is smooth and well combined. This ensures a crackly top on your brownies.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract. The mixture should look glossy and pale.
  4. Sift the flour, matcha powder, and salt directly into the wet ingredients. Gently fold everything together with a spatula until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the brownies tough. Fold in the white chocolate chips.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly with a spatula. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs. Do not overbake!
  6. Allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan. Once cool, lift them out using the parchment paper and cut them into 12 rectangular bars.
  7. Melt the dark chocolate in the microwave in 30-second intervals. Use a piping bag or a toothpick to draw “hair” at the top of each bar and a jagged “scar” or mouth. Press two candy eyes into the chocolate hair or face. Finally, insert a piece of pretzel stick into the sides of the brownie near the bottom to act as the bolts.
