Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large apples (such as Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Gala), peeled and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Start by washing, peeling, and coring your apples. Slice them into even wedges, about 1/4 inch thick. Ensuring the slices are uniform helps them cook evenly at the same rate.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter until it starts to bubble slightly. Be careful not to let it brown or burn, as this will change the flavor of the sauce.
  3. Place the apple slices into the skillet. Sprinkle the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg over the fruit. Toss the apples gently using a wooden spoon or spatula to ensure every piece is well-coated in the spice mixture.
  4. Pour in the water and lemon juice. This helps create a steam effect and prevents the sugar from burning. Cover the skillet and let the apples simmer for about 5 to 8 minutes. Stir occasionally until the apples are fork-tender but not mushy.
  5. Remove the lid and stir in the vanilla extract. Continue to cook for another 2 to 3 minutes without the lid. This allows the liquid to reduce into a thick, glossy syrup that clings to the apples.
