Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×9 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray to prevent the fruit juices from sticking to the sides.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with the granulated sugar, lemon juice, and half of the cinnamon. Ensure every slice is evenly coated before spreading the apples into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, and the remaining cinnamon. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the cold, cubed butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Evenly sprinkle the oat and butter mixture over the top of the apples. Do not press the topping down; keeping it loose allows the heat to circulate and creates a crispier texture.
  5. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes. You will know it is done when the topping is golden brown and the apple juices are bubbling around the edges.
  6. Remove the crisp from the oven and let it sit for at least 10 minutes before serving. This allows the fruit filling to thicken slightly, making it easier to scoop.
