2 cans (12.4 oz each) refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing
1 can (21 oz) apple pie filling
3 large eggs
1/2 cup heavy cream or whole milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 cup maple syrup (optional)
2 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
Step 1: Prep the Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray to ensure the casserole is easy to serve later.
Step 2: Prepare the Cinnamon Rolls: Open the cans of cinnamon rolls and set the icing containers aside for later. Use a knife or kitchen shears to cut each individual cinnamon roll into six bite-sized chunks.
Step 3: Layer the Base: Scatter half of the cut-up cinnamon roll pieces evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spoon the apple pie filling over the top, spreading it out so it covers the dough pieces evenly.
Step 4: Add the Final Layer: Place the remaining cinnamon roll pieces over the top of the apple layer. Try to distribute them evenly so every bite of the finished casserole has a good balance of dough and fruit.
Step 5: Whisk the Custard: In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and melted butter. If you prefer a sweeter casserole, whisk in the maple syrup as well. Pour this mixture evenly over the entire dish.
Step 6: Bake to Perfection: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes. You are looking for the dough to be puffed up and golden brown, and the custard to be fully set in the center.
Step 7: Glaze and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven. While it is still warm, drizzle the reserved icing from the cinnamon roll cans over the top. Let it sit for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
