Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup pure apple cider (reduced to 1/4 cup)
  • 1 package refrigerated pizza dough or puff pastry
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons milk or heavy cream (if needed)
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, bring the apple cider to a boil. Let it simmer until it reduces to about 1/4 cup. This should take about 10-12 minutes. Set it aside to cool completely; it will thicken into a syrup.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until it forms a smooth paste. Stir in 1 tablespoon of your cooled apple cider syrup to give the filling that signature apple flavor.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out your dough into a large rectangle (about 12×16 inches). Spread the cinnamon butter mixture evenly across the entire surface of the dough, leaving a tiny margin at the very edges.
  4. Fold the dough in half lengthwise so the filling is encased inside. Use a pizza cutter or a sharp knife to cut the dough into 12 even strips (about 1 inch wide each).
  5. Pick up each strip and twist it several times in opposite directions, like a piece of rope. Place the twists on a parchment-lined baking sheet, pressing the ends down slightly to keep them from unraveling during baking.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the twists for 12 to 15 minutes, or until they are puffed up and a beautiful golden brown color. Remove them from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes on the pan.
  7. Whisk together the powdered sugar, the remaining apple cider syrup, and a pinch of salt. If it is too thick, add a splash of milk. Drizzle the glaze generously over the warm twists before serving.
