2 lbs chicken wings (split into flats and drumettes)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
Salt and black pepper to taste
1 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce (pick a dark variety)
Optional: 2-3 drops of black food-safe gel coloring for a deeper “bat” effect
Instructions
Step 1: Prep and Dry the Wings Pat the chicken wings thoroughly dry with paper towels. Removing excess moisture is the secret to getting them extra crispy in the air fryer. Place the dried wings in a large mixing bowl.
Step 2: Season the Chicken Drizzle the olive oil over the wings, then sprinkle with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Toss everything together until every wing is evenly coated with the dry rub.
Step 3: Initial Air Frying Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Place the wings in the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they aren’t overcrowded. Cook for 15 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time to ensure even browning.
Step 4: Prepare the Bat Wing Glaze While the wings are cooking, pour your BBQ sauce into a small bowl. If you want a truly jet-black “bat wing” look, stir in a few drops of black food coloring until the sauce reaches your desired shade of darkness.
Step 5: Saucing and Final Crisp Remove the wings from the air fryer and toss them in the dark BBQ sauce until fully coated. Return the coated wings to the air fryer and cook for an additional 5 minutes at 400°F. This allows the sauce to caramelize and stick to the wings, creating that spooky, glossy finish.
