Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices of thick-cut bread (Brioche or Texas Toast work best)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • A pinch of salt
  • Cooking spray or melted butter for the basket

Instructions

  1. Take your thick slices of bread and cut each slice into three even strips. If the bread is very fresh, you might want to leave the slices out for 30 minutes to dry out slightly, as this helps them absorb the custard without falling apart.
  2. In a shallow bowl or pie dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Whisk until the mixture is completely combined and there are no large streaks of egg remaining.
  3. Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). While it heats up, lightly grease the air fryer basket with cooking spray or a small amount of melted butter to prevent sticking.
  4. Dip each bread strip into the egg mixture. Be sure to coat all sides, but do not let them soak for more than a few seconds. If the bread gets too saturated, it will become difficult to handle and may turn out soggy.
  5. Place the dipped sticks in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Make sure they are not touching so the air can circulate. Cook for 4 minutes, then flip each stick and cook for an additional 3 to 4 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove the sticks from the air fryer. If desired, you can toss them in a mixture of cinnamon and sugar while they are still hot for an extra sweet crunch.
