Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large firm apples (such as Honeycrisp, Gala, or Pink Lady)
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar or coconut sugar (optional)
  • Non-stick cooking spray (optional)

Instructions

  1. Start by washing and drying your apples thoroughly. You can choose to core them using an apple corer, or leave the core in for a pretty star-shaped center. Using a mandoline slicer or a very sharp knife, cut the apples into very thin, uniform rounds (about 1/8 inch thick). Uniformity is key to ensuring they all crisp up at the same rate.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the apple slices with the ground cinnamon and sugar if you are using it. Gently toss the slices with your hands or a spatula until every piece is evenly coated. Be careful not to break the thin slices as you mix them.
  3. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with non-stick cooking spray if desired. Place the apple slices in the basket in a single layer. It is okay if they overlap very slightly as they will shrink during cooking, but for the best results, avoid stacking them in thick layers.
  4. Set your air fryer to 300°F (150°C). Cook the apple slices for about 15 to 20 minutes. Every 5 minutes, pause the air fryer to shake the basket or manually flip the slices to ensure even drying. Keep a close eye on them during the last few minutes, as they can go from golden to burnt very quickly.
  5. Once the apples look slightly shriveled and are just starting to turn golden brown at the edges, remove them from the air fryer. Place them on a wire cooling rack. The chips will continue to crisp up significantly as they cool down to room temperature.
