Description
A delicious and comforting baked version of French toast, perfect for family brunches or special occasions.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf day-old brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing gently to ensure all top pieces are thoroughly soaked.
- In a small bowl, combine melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Drizzle this mixture evenly over the custard-soaked bread.
- Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or ideally overnight.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
- Allow the French toast bake to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Optionally serve with maple syrup, fresh berries, or a sprinkle of powdered sugar.
Notes
Use day-old bread for the best results, and feel free to customize with toppings like nuts or chocolate chips.
