Description

Delightful sourdough doughnuts that combine the tangy flavor of sourdough with the sweetness of classic donuts, perfect for any occasion.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup sourdough starter (active and bubbly)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, sugar, milk, and eggs. Beat until well combined.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, nutmeg, and baking soda. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until a cohesive dough forms.
  3. Add the melted butter to the dough and knead on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 2-3 hours or until it doubles in size.
  5. Once risen, turn the dough onto a floured surface, roll out to 1/2 inch thickness and cut out doughnut shapes.
  6. Heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C). Fry the doughnuts in batches until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes on each side.
  7. Remove and drain excess oil on paper towels. Dust with powdered sugar while warm if desired.
  8. Enjoy warm, plain or with beverages like coffee or tea!
