Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the frosting:
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the water and cocoa powder until completely combined.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Stir the flour mixture into the skillet mixture. Then, add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  5. Pour the batter back into the skillet and bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. For the frosting, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in cocoa powder, milk, and powdered sugar, mixing until smooth.
  7. Pour the frosting over the warm cake and allow it to set before serving.

Notes

Serve warm or at room temperature, and consider adding nuts or sprinkles for extra flavor.
