Description

A festive and indulgent dish that combines the warm spices of gingerbread with syrup-soaked bread, perfect for holiday brunches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of bread (preferably brioche or challah)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Butter for greasing the pan
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.
  2. Cut the bread into thick slices and arrange them in the baking dish, overlapping slightly if necessary.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread, ensuring all pieces are soaked, then cover and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the dish for 45-50 minutes, or until set and golden brown on top.
  6. Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup.

Notes

For best results, use day-old bread. Add caramelized apples or nuts for extra flavor and texture.
