Description

A delightful breakfast casserole featuring sweet apples and rich bread, perfect for serving at brunch.


Ingredients

  • 6 slices of bread (preferably brioche or challah)
  • 2 apples, peeled and diced
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Butter for greasing

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Cut the bread into cubes and layer half of the bread in the dish.
  3. Scatter the diced apples over the bread layer.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  5. Pour the egg mixture over the bread and apples, making sure everything is well-coated.
  6. Top with the remaining bread cubes and sprinkle with nuts if using.
  7. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  8. In the morning, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
  10. Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve warm with maple syrup or powdered sugar. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
