Description

A deliciously hearty dish combining bratwurst sausages and sweet caramelized onions, perfect for gatherings or cozy dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 46 high-quality bratwurst sausages (pork or chicken)
  • 1 bottle (12 oz) of lager or ale (or apple cider for non-alcoholic option)
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (or olive oil)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)
  • Mustard for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt butter in an oven-safe skillet over medium heat, add onions and salt, and caramelize for about 15 minutes. Stir in brown sugar and garlic, cooking for another 5 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Push the onions to the side, add bratwurst, and sear for about 5 minutes until browned.
  4. Pour beer over bratwurst and onions, scrape the bottom of the skillet to deglaze, sprinkle thyme, and bring to a simmer. Cover and transfer to the oven to braise for 30-40 minutes.

Notes

For a unique twist, try using different types of beers; darker ales or stouts can add a richer flavor. If not a fan of beer, apple cider is a great substitute.
