Crockpot Bolognese Sauce

Description

A rich and savory Bolognese sauce cooked in a slow cooker, perfect for family dinners or meal prep.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450g) lean ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 carrots (peeled and diced)
  • 2 celery stalks (diced)
  • 4 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 12 oz (340g) spaghetti or your favorite pasta
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)
  • Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep the vegetables by finely chopping the onion, peeling and dicing the carrots, dicing the celery, and mincing the garlic.
  2. Brown the meat in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it into small pieces. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add the browned meat, chopped vegetables, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine (if using), oregano, basil, thyme, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper to the slow cooker. Stir to combine.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours.
  5. Stir in the milk or cream and cook for an additional 15 minutes on low.
  6. Cook spaghetti according to package instructions; reserve some pasta water.
  7. Serve the Bolognese sauce over cooked pasta and garnish with Parmesan cheese and fresh basil.

Notes

This sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months. Reheat thoroughly before serving.
