Description

A beloved Filipino treat featuring fluffy, sweet bread topped with rich cheese, perfect for breakfast or snacks.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • Melted butter for brushing
  • Sugar for sprinkling
  • Grated cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm water and yeast; let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add milk, melted butter, eggs, and the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  4. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into small balls. Roll each ball into a long rope, twist, and shape it into a spiral. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar and cheese while still warm.
