Description
A beautiful and flavorful bread featuring the bright, zesty taste of lemon, perfect for gatherings and brunches.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- Zest of 1 lemon
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- Coarse sugar for topping
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- In another bowl, mix warm milk, melted butter, eggs, lemon zest, and lemon juice until well combined.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough begins to form.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide into 3 equal pieces, roll each into long ropes, and braid them together.
- Place the braided dough on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the braid with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
