Description

A beautiful and flavorful bread featuring the bright, zesty taste of lemon, perfect for gatherings and brunches.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, mix warm milk, melted butter, eggs, lemon zest, and lemon juice until well combined.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough begins to form.
  4. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide into 3 equal pieces, roll each into long ropes, and braid them together.
  7. Place the braided dough on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the braid with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Store tightly wrapped at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
