Description

A delightful homemade baguette with a crispy crust and soft, airy interior, perfect for pairing with meals or enjoyed on its own.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. In a separate bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C).
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 2 equal pieces. Shape each into a long loaf.
  7. Place the loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Make diagonal slashes on top of the loaves with a sharp knife.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

For a crustier exterior, place a pan with water in the oven while baking. Store baguettes at room temperature, wrapped in a clean towel, for up to 2 days.
